Died on Thursday, November 22, at the Cornerstone Residence of Fosston, just 3 days shy of his 90th birthday.Walter was born on November 25, 1928, the second child of Alice Caroline Johnson and Carl Melvin Gunderson. He was preceded in birth by his sister, Clarice Angeline, who was 2 years his senior. In his early years his family lived in the Bejou & Erskine area, and moved to Fosston at about the age of 14, when his father bought the farm Walter owns to this day. Walter has been raising cattle and farming his entire life. First by working beside his father on the family farm, then by continuing to farm after the death of his father in 1968. Alice and Walter continued to live together, until it became necessary for her to move to Fair Meadow Nursing home in 1990. While Walter never married, he spent most holidays with his sister, Clarice, and her family. Clarice married Raymond William Lindberg in 1948 and had one son, Wayne. Walter and Clarice were also close with all their cousins. They always enjoyed gathering with the Gunderson's at the cousin reunions that Orly helped organize. Walter was a hard -working honest man. Raising cattle, planting crops, putting up hay and mending fences. He cut down trees and split the wood for heating, and picked rocks keeping his fields virtually free of rocks. He would not walk past a rock in his fields without picking it up. When he wasn't busy helping his father, he was working the land at his own farm he had purchased, just a couple miles down the road. Wayne remembers as a child cutting, wheat and shocking it to dry on the farm. And everyone marveled that Walter was still cutting down trees for firewood just a few years ago. He lived a simple life, watching his pennies, and carefully saving and planning for his own retirement. His hard work may have slowed his body down, but he never really retired. Walter entered the Cornerstone Residence of Fosston in February of 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl & Alice, his sister & husband (Clarice & Ray). Survivors include one nephew, Wayne (Jan) of Minnetonka, 2 great nephews Randall Lindberg (Grace) of Minnetonka, Matthew Lindberg of Duluth, one great niece Rena Lenz (Matt) of Minneapolis and one brother-in-law, Don Aagenes (Clarice's second husband), 2 great-grand nieces, Eira & Erna, and numerous cousins.
