Vi Frethem, age 77, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Thursday (December 11th) at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, ND. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday (December 16th) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fosston with Father Dave Super and Father Rick Lambert concelebrating. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Free Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Monday (December 15th) and for one hour prior to the service, all at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Violet Katherine Shea was born on June 10, 1931 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Dennis and Margaret (Luecken) Shea. She was baptized, received her first communion and was confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu, Minnesota. She started school in Mahnomen, Minnesota, attending school through the eighth grade at St. Michael's Catholic School. She then moved with her family to Beltrami, Minnesota and she attended Fertile High School in Fertile, Minnesota. Following her schooling, Vi moved to Fosston.Vi was united in marriage to Stanley Frethem on April 7, 1951 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Fosston. She worked as a nurse's aide at the Fosston Hospital and at Midway Care Center in Fosston for many years. She also worked at the Pine to Prairie café in Fosston.In her later years, Vi worked and volunteered with the Senior Meals Program in Fosston. Stanley passed away on April 17, 2004. She continued to live in Fosston until moving to the Poplar Meadow senior living apartments in McIntosh in March of 2008.Vi was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where she taught Friday school for many years. She was also a long-time member of the Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Auxiliary Post #114 of Fosston. She enjoyed flowers, listening to the radio and her dog, Molly. Vi especially enjoyed the time that she spent with her family.Vi passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota with her family by her side at the age of 77 years, six months and one day.She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Dan) Salvhus of McIntosh; three granddaughters, Leah (Jay) Mahlen of Erskine, Jill Salvhus of Grand Forks, ND, and Amie Salvhus of Grand Forks, ND; special godchild, Jerry Trautner of Mahnomen, MN; sister-in-law, Alice Emmons of Fosston; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Fritz and Helen Mae Frethem of Fosston; four nephew, four nieces and many cousins.She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Delores and her husband, Larry Trautner; brother-in-law, Gene Emmons and Glen Frethem and his wife, Gladys.Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Vi's family and friends.Active Pallbearers will be Jim Trautner, Mark Trautner, Scott Salvhus, Jerry Trautner, Ken Winkler, Bill Bingham, Bob Olson, Jamie Trautner, and Dustin Trautner.
