Vernon "Bud" Rystad, age 80, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Wednesday (July 15th) at the Midway Care Center in Fosston. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (July 18th) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Friday (July 17th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. Military honors will be provided by the Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post #114 of Fosston and the Spring Lake VFW Post #2759 of Lengby. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Vernon Keith Rystad was born on May 4, 1929 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Tommy and Clara (Christenson) Rystad. He was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School. Bud was called to duty for the United States Army in June of 1952, faithfully serving his country during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge in June of 1954 and returned home. After returning from the war, he attended and graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. Bud continued to work in Minneapolis for another year.Bud had purchased the farm in high school and decided it was time to move back. He farmed in Fosston and was a rural mail carrier part time. Later, he became a full time mail carrier and retired after 25 years.In 1957 he married Ruthie Hanson at Hope Lutheran Church. They had two daughters, Vicki and Sue, which Bud had recently said were "his greatest accomplishments."Bud enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a special connection with all animals. He was well known for growing "giant radishes" and truly enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening.He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, the Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post #114 of Fosston and the Spring Lake V.F.W. Post #2759 of Lengby. Vernon "Bud" Rystad passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the Midway Care Center in Fosston at the age of 80 years, two months and 11 days.He is survived by his wife, Ruthie of Fosston; two daughters, Vicki (Craig) Helling and their family, Mia, Patrick, Kylee, and Tyler of Staples, MN; and Sue (Dean) Schnichels and their family, Cole and Ethan of Lakeville, MN; three sisters, Alene Bjerklie of Park Rapids, MN, Donna (Don) Thomas of Fosston, and Carol Jean (Leo) Taflin of Port Orchard, WA; mother-in-law, Inga Hanson of Fosston; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie (Sheldon) Jeska of Minneapolis, MN and Audrey (Kenny) Mershman of Bemidji, MN. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Clara Rystad; brothers-in-law, Rod Bjerklie and Dale Jeska; and father-in-law, Eddie Hanson.
