Vernon R. Hanson, age 70, of Mentor, Minnesota passed away on Friday, January 12th at his home in Mentor. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 17th at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor with Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Erskine, Minnesota, and for one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery, rural Mentor, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine is in charge of the arrangements.Vernon Roger Hanson was born on January 22, 1936 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to parents John and Clara (Bakken) Hanson. He grew up in Plummer, Minnesota and graduated with the class of 1954 from Purshing High School in Plummer. Vernon served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958 and was stationed in Alaska. He was an Airman 1st Class.He was united in marriage to Janis Stone on October 19, 1964 in Sisseton, South Dakota, and they made their home in Mentor, Minnesota.Vernon worked construction as a heavy equipment operator for George E. Haggart, Inc. in Fargo for nearly 40 years. After retirement, he worked for Simonson Construction and Erickson Excavating in the Mentor and Erskine area.He was a member at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor, Vanderwaal - Lusty American Legion Post 421 in Mentor, the Mentor City Council, and Mentor Volunteer Fire Department. Vernon loved the outdoors and camping, taking long drives, watching NASCAR, spending all day at Benoy's Garage "working'', shaking dice; helping family, neighbors, and friends; celebrating the 4th of July and shooting fireworks; and he especially loved spending time with the grandkids.On Friday, January 12, 2007 Vernon passed away at his home in Mentor at the age of 70 years, 11 months, and 21 days.Survivors include wife Janis of Mentor; two daughters, Jennifer "Aubie" (Bruce) Hageman of Thompson, ND, and Tina Braun of Mentor; one son, Mike (Katie) of Omaha, NE; two granddaughters, Andee, age 13, and Gracie Hanson, age 3 1/2; one grandson, Jakob, age 8; one brother, Wally (Bess) of Vacaville, CA; two sisters, Jeanette (Bernerd) Remick of Red Lake Falls, MN, and Darlene Hanson of Erskine, MN; best friend and brother-in-law, Pete Benoy and his wife Bonnie of Maple Lake, MN; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents.
