Verna Sather, age 91, of Fosston, Minnesota passed away on Monday (January 15th) at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (January 19th) at Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Alan Arneson officiating. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday (January 18th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston. Family condolences may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.comVerna Merle Malmo was born on November 4, 1915 in Gonvick, Minnesota to parents Ole and Echo (Herberg) Malmo. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Gonvick High School and, during her high school years, played on the girls' basketball team. Following graduation, Verna attended teacher's training in Grand Forks and at Bemidji State Teacher's College. She was united in marriage to Fred Stensing in 1943 and to this union, three children were born, Richard, Virginia and Carole. Fred passed away unexpectedly in 1952. Verna was married to Elmer Sather on October 30, 1954 and to this union, one son, John was born. Elmer passed away in 1979.Verna was a rural school teacher for many years, teaching at the Ahmann school near Mahnomen, Minnesota and then at the Pine Hill school in Columbia Township, east of Fosston. (the Pine Hill school was the last one room school house in Minnesota). Later, she was a Head Start teacher for I.C.C.C. (Inter County Community Council) and then the Discovery Day Care Center, located in the Embassy Community Center in Fosston. She retired in 1994 at the age of 79. She continued to live at her home in rural Fosston until she moved to the First Care Nursing Home in January of 2005.Verna was a member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church and past member of Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School at both churches for many years. She was a member of the Embassy Community Center where she was very active in many of their functions. She was also a member of the Ambassadors of Praise for several years.Verna loved to play board games and card games, crossword puzzles and knitting. She also was an avid sports fan; watching or listening to the Minnesota Twins and especially high school sports.Verna passed away on Monday, January 15, 2007 at First Care Nursing Home at the age of 91 years, two months and 11 days.Survivors include four children, Richard Stensing of Powder Springs, GA, Virginia Krogstad of Coon Rapids, MN, Carole Archibald of Farmington, MN, and John (Barb) Sather of Fosston; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and other relatives also survive.She was preceded in death by her husbands, Freddy Stensing and Elmer Sather; her parents; one granddaughter, Brenda; twin sister, Vera Torkelson; sister, Ella Johnson; two brothers, Ralph and Manley Malmo; and two sons-in-law, Butch Archibald and John Krogstad.
