Thelma Laines, age 95, of Fosston, MN passed away on Sunday, January 9th at Essentia Health Long Term Care in Fosston. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, January 18th at 2:00 PM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour before the memorial service at the church. Interment of cremains will be at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements. Sympathy messages may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Thelma Genevieve Olson was born on April 14, 1915 in Lengby, MN, to parents Martin and Juri (Helle) Olson. Thelma lived most of her early life in the Lengby area. After her mother's death in 1930, Thelma lived with her aunt in Cass Lake, MN and graduated from Cass Lake High School.Thelma moved to California after high school and lived with two future sisters-in-law in Oakland and San Diego while working during World War II. She married Curt Laines, her childhood sweetheart, in Reno, Nevada in 1942. After the war, they lived in San Diego until 1961 when they moved back home to Lengby. Four years later they moved back to San Diego. After retirement, they settled in Lengby and later in Fosston, MN. After one more move to California, Thelma finally came home to Minnesota when her son Gary retired and moved to Fosston.Thelma was the kind of person who comes along only rarely in this world. She was loving and hard-working. She did not go out of her way to be nice, it just came naturally. Her grandchildren loved going to see Grandma as she gave them homemade cinnamon rolls and milkshakes whenever they wanted them.On Sunday, January 9, 2011 Thelma passed away at Essentia Health Long Term Care in Fosston at the age of 95 years.She is survived by her two sons, Gary (Nancy) Laines of Wheaton, MN and Don (Ellen) Laines of Fresno, CA; four grandchildren, Julie, Erik, Mark, and Brad; and three great grandchildren, Alexandra, Santiago, and Cailyn. Also surviving are her sister, Adeline Joseph, and many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. Thelma was preceded in death by Curt Laines, her husband of 54 years; two brothers, Ralph and Knute; and one sister, Bernice.
