He attended school in Minneapolis until his Senior year when he moved back to Erskine, living with his grandparents. He graduated from Erskine High School in 1973.

After high school, he returned to Minneapolis and entered the United States Navy. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Susan Cleath. Steve and Susan were married on February 14, 1980. They stayed in Minneapolis for 15 years where Steve worked for Circuit Services. The family moved to Erskine in 2001. Steve worked for Team Industries in Bagley for 17 years until his retirement.

Steve loved birdwatching, gardening, reading, and, most of all, spending time with his family. He truly enjoyed the simple things in life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, LaVonne Drake; and one brother, Allan Mayer.
