Sidney Hoialmen, age 97, from Fosston, MN passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 8th at his residence in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 13th at 11:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 12th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Poplar River Cemetery, Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements. Messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Sidney Arnold Hoialmen was born December 27, 1914 in rural Clearbrook, MN to parents Jensena Bertina Olson-Hoialmen and Albert Olai Hoialmen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1932.Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sidney enlisted in the United States Navy on February 18, 1942 where he served as a sonar operator on the commissioning crews of the USS Tinosa and the USS Bergall. After completing 9 successful wartime runs in the South Pacific, Sidney was honorably discharged on September 29, 1945.Sidney was united in marriage to Phyllis Joyce Pederson on May 17, 1944 (Syttende Mai), in New London, CT. Following the end of WWII, Sidney and Phyllis settled for a brief time in Clinton, IA, where they gave birth to their only son, Douglas Ignatius. In 1946 Sid moved his family to Crookston, MN, where he opened and operated Sid's Beauty Shoppe.In 1960 Sidney and his family moved to Fosston, MN, where Sidney entered into a partnership with his father-in-law, Ignatius, in the furniture and funeral businesses until his retirement in 1988.Sidney spent much of his retirement enjoying summers at the cabin that he and his wife built together on Union Lake in Erskine, MN, in 1957. While at the lake, Sidney loved fishing, water skiing, wood working and entertaining friends and family. Additionally, Sidney and Phyllis were avid square dancers and spent a considerable amount of time traveling around the country to attend square dance conventions throughout their retirement.Throughout his life, Sidney continued to play an active role in his community. In addition to being a devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church, Sidney also served as a volunteer fire fighter for over 30 years, was a member of the Rotary Club and was a founding member and president of Fosston Homes Inc.Sidney passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Fosston, MN, on Sunday, January 08, 2012, at the age of 97.Sidney is survived by his son Douglas (Fosston), grandchildren Nathan Hoialmen and wife Angela (Minneapolis), Jessica Link and husband Matthew (Castle Rock, CO), Kathryn Hoialmen (Fosston) and friend Brian Hedlund (Fosston) and Jacob Hoialmen (Fargo) and friend Katrina Burslie (Fargo) and great grandchildren Spencer Hoialmen, Sydney and Alton Link and Alexander Hoialmen. Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 58 years Phyllis, two sisters, Marie and Esther and two brothers, Ruben and Gordon.Sailor, Rest Your Oars
