Rueben Brekke, age 91, of McIntosh, MN, passed away on Tuesday, March 10th, at McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18th, at Vernes Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Rev. Gordon Syverson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday, March 17th and for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. All visitation will be held at Vernes Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, serving McIntosh. Messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Rueben Millard Brekke was born on December 27, 1923 in Hill River Township, Minnesota to parents Olaus and Turine Brooke Brekke. He attended school through the eighth grade at Ridge Lawn School in Hill River Township. Rueben entered the United States Army in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theatre of operations until his honorable discharge in 1946. He served in the Philippians and in Korea during World War II.Rueben was united in marriage to Lorraine Syverson on May 27, 1950. They lived on the Brekke farm until 1977 when they moved to their new home in McIntosh, Minnesota. In 2004 they moved to Poplar Meadows Apartments in McIntosh. Lorraine passed away in October of 2006. They were married for 56 years. Rueben continued residing at Poplar Meadows until his health forced him to reside at McIntosh Senior Living in January of 2015.Rueben was a life-long member of Vernes Lutheran Church. He enjoyed repairing old tractors and anything with a motor. He also enjoyed riding four-wheelers, mowing lawn, playing cards and especially beating his two granddaughters husbands in a game of "pitch" and seeing his great grandchildren. He hauled gravel and grain his entire life and farmed, but driving truck was his passion. He drove until the age of 75 making many life-long friends along the way. Rodney Boreen of Bemidji being one of many.Rueben passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at McIntosh Senior Living at the age of 91 years.Survivors include three sons, Wesley (Valerie) Brekke of McIntosh, Wayne (Renee) Brekke of Trail, MN, and Jeffrey Brekke of Fosston; two granddaughters, Beth (Shawn) Rominski of Stephen, MN, and Sandy (Todd) Enger of Northwood, ND; five great grandchildren, Emma, Mason, and Henry Rominski and Westin and Grant Enger.Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Leona (Norris) Brekke of McIntosh, Delores Syverson and Ruby Heideman of Fosston, Conne Syverson of Trail, Corky Syverson of McIntosh; brother-in-law, Morris Hendrickson of Trail; other brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd and Ardell (Syverson) Opdahl of Oklee, Jerome and Bernice (Syverson) Voxland of McIntosh, Mark and Gloria (Syverson) Morque of Lebanon, MO, Entrip and Sharon Syverson of Lakeville, MN, and Richard and Viola (Syverson) Georgeson of Hillsboro, ND; nephews, Arvid (Nancy) Brekke of Esko, MN, and Vern (Tanya) Brekke of Bozeman, MT; niece, Bonnie (Brekke) and Ed Pettersen of Trail; and many other nieces, nephews and relatives.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; brothers, Art and his wife, Esther Brekke, Norris Brekke and Lloyd Brekke; brothers-in-law, Floyd, Arnold and Karsten Syverson, and Curtis Heideman; sisters-in-law, Verna Syverson and Eleanora (Syverson) Hendrickson. Pallbearers: Clay Syverson, David Heideman, Chester Smeby, Steve Urness, Jeremiah Wishard, and Arvid Brekke.
