He grew up on the family farm homesteaded by his grandfather near Turtle Lake in Queen Township. He attended and graduated from Fosston elementary and high schools. After graduating from Fosston High School in 1952, he worked for neighboring farmers including the Larson Mink Farm. He then moved to Montana where he was employed by Rossmiller Farms of Great Falls. In the early 1960s he was employed as a firefighter by the U.S. Forest Service based in Wyoming. He was united in marriage to Ilane Lee/Shefveland on July 25, 1964 at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. They made their home near Cross Lake in Queen Township, where they raised their family and spent their entire married life. In 1964 he joined his father and brother, Marlly, in the family dairy operation (Lakeview Farms) which continued until his retirement in 1999. Rolly was a lifelong member of Kingo Lutheran Church where he served as a past and present member of the church council. Rolly and Ilane were named East Polk County Farm Family of the year in 1993, and in 2000, they were honored with the Valley Farmer and Homemaker award by the Minnesota Red River Valley Development Association. Rolly was devoted to his family and his many friends. He treasured the outdoors in his work and in his recreation, and shared that passion with his family, friends and community. He was outgoing, steadfast, and unselfish. He took great pleasure in reading (with a particular interest in history), feeding and watching birds, was an avid sportsman and a legendary prankster. Rolly and Ilane, and often the children, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. In 1997, he and Ilane toured Germany, Denmark and Norway which gave them an opportunity to explore their heritage, both that of family and of faith.
