Orland Aspen, age 71, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Sunday, June 2nd, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo, ND. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9th, at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. Jane Ekholm officiating. Inurnment will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the church. Orland Jeffrey Aspen was born on March 9, 1948 in Fosston, Minnesota to parents Orville and Helga (Schrott) Aspen. He was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. He grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School in 1966. Following high school, he attended Bemidji State College and graduated with a degree in education. Orland was united in marriage to Linda Kay Walberg on September 13, 1969 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Grygla, Minnesota. Together, Orland and Linda lived and raised their family in Hill City, Minnesota. Orland taught elementary music, high school music/choir and and mathematics in the Hill City School District for 33 ½ years. He retired in 2004 and moved to Fosston. They cared for Orland's mother, Helga, until her passing in 2012 and continue to make their home in Fosston. While enjoying his retirement years, Orland worked part-time at the Fosston Golf Club, gave vocal lessons, and was on the Fosston Utilities Commission. He attended Hope Lutheran Church where he was active in the church choir and sang in the Men's Quartet. He enjoyed golf, bowling and taking care of his vegetable garden. Something he also enjoyed and took pride in, was teaching his grandson, Jacob, to golf. Orland passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Essentia Health Hospital in Fargo after a hard-fought battle with cancer at the age of 71 years.Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Linda, of Fosston; one daughter, Amy (David) Robertson and their son, Jacob, of Vancouver, BC; one son, Jeffrey Aspen of Roseville, MN; two brothers, Frank (Marilyn) Aspen of St. Paul, MN, and Gary (Kathy) Aspen of Coon Rapids, MN; two sisters, Renee Wittenberg of St. Cloud, MN, and Becky (Ron) Ostrom of Lathrop, CA. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Roger Wittenberg.
