Opal Algaard was born at home on July 1, 1920 to Selmer and Hulda (Tverberg) Dunrud in rural Gonvick, Minnesota. She grew up on a farm north of Fosston and attended Willowside Country School. After completing country school, she worked as live-in help for various families in Fosston. On August 31, 1940, she married Earl Algaard. They made their home in Fosston, except for a brief period during World War II when they lived in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Opal enjoyed her home and family. She lovingly raised five children Beverly, David, Virginia, Maxine, and Charles. She was a very good cook; loved to bake and search cookbooks as well as newspapers for new recipes. She had a wonderful appreciation of nature and animals which she passed on to her children. In the summer, she tended her flower and vegetable gardens, and in the fall, was busy with canning and freezing food for her family. She baked buns, cinnamon bread, and caramel rolls every Saturday and often shared with elderly neighbors. She always kept at least three well stocked cookie jars on her counter and often homemade bars or cakes besides. She kept her Norwegian heritage alive by making potato klub, lefse, flat bread, fattigmand, doughnuts, and fruit soup. In her later years Opal was a Lioness and enjoyed going to bingo with friends. Opal remained in her home until 2005 when she moved to Cornerstone Residence in Fosston. She was very appreciative of the care she received during her years there and thought of the staff and residents as family. On Wednesday November 2nd, 2016 Opal passed away at the age of 96 years. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Beverly (Cecil) Nelson of Monticello, MN, Virginia (Larry) Siverson of Bemidji, MN, Maxine (Dean) Sorgaard of Fosston, MN, and son Charles Algaard of Bemidji, MN; daughter in-law Darlene Algaard of Moorhead, MN; one brother Harry Dunrud of Fosston, MN; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
