Omer Swenson, age 89, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Monday (April 30th) at Cornerstone Residence in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (May 4th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston with the Rev. Dean Bell officiating. Interment will be in Cross Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Fosston. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Omer Norman Swenson was born on July 22, 1922 in Columbia Township, Minnesota to parents Oscar and Anna (Myrvold) Swenson. He grew up in Columbia Township and graduated from Fosston High School. He then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he graduated in 1948. Omer was united in marriage to Geneva Emma Poppe on June 25, 1949. Omer worked as a teacher until 1962 when he began work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His career took him to several locations including Valentine, Nebraska, Long Lake Refuge in North Dakota, Crab Orchard, Illinois, Devils Lake, North Dakota, and was manager of the Tamarac Refuge near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota at the time of his retirement.Following his retirement in 1983, they moved back to his home area near Fosston. During his retirement years, Omer worked in insurance, serving on the Thrivent board, and was active in his church and community. He and Neva also spent time traveling to and selling at flea markets. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Fosston. Omer passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012 at Cornerstone Residence in Fosston at the age of 89 years, nine months and eight days.Survivors include many nieces, nephews and cousins; and sister-in-law, Martha Meyer of Kiester, MN.He was preceded in death by his wife on March 20, 2011; and his parents.Honorary Pallbearer: Merle NelsonActive Pallbearers: Doug Swetland, Tom Vacek, Richard Swenson, Edwin Swenson, Paul Nelson, and Chester Nelson.
