Her family spoke Norwegian while attending to the daily needs of farm life. She began learning English when she attended a rural school near her farm in Badger Township. She and her sisters and brother walked to and from school in the warm seasons and cross country skied the distance in winter. Norma was baptized and confirmed in Norwegian at Saron Lutheran Church north of Erskine. While working in Crookston, MN, Norma worked as a waitress for the Sweet Shop Café and the Wayne Hotel Café. While in Crookston, she met Kenneth Hanson who worked for Otter Tail Power Co. They were joined in marriage on May 20, 1950, at Rev. Skogerboe's residence in Erskine. They lived in Erskine, purchasing a home on the south shore of Cameron Lake. To this marriage two children were born, Yvonne in 1951, and Dale in 1955. Kenneth died in October of 1970. Norma loved nature and she especially enjoyed feeding and watching the birds. She had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and spent many hours outside. She was a very proud mom, grandma and great-grandma. Norma enjoyed her time babysitting her great-granddaughter Marin one day a week when Norma was in her 80's.
