Minnie Mitzel

Minnie (Horner) Mitzel, age 101, and formerly from Mentor, MN passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in Yuba City, CA where she resided at The Fountains Nursing Care Facility for the past 4 years. Minnie Mitzel was born on April, 22, 1915, in Linton, ND to Simon Peter Horner and Elizabeth Kelsch. Minnie had seven brothers (Paul, Frank, John, Marcus, George, Peter, and Valentine) and two sisters (Helen, Cecelia (Shirley)) who all predeceased her in death. She married Andrew (Andy) Paul Mitzel on January 17, 1935 and moved to Mentor, MN in 1940, where they lived and farmed for 71 years. Her children are: daughter Irene (Don) Espeseth of Yuba City, CA, son, Robert Mitzel, son, Roger (Becky) Mitzel, of San Jose, CA, son, Don (Sherry) Mitzel, of San Jose, CA, infant son Joseph Mitzel, daughter, Carol (Michael) LaPlante, of Lake Waynoka, OH, son, Curtis Mitzel of Stockton, CA. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband Andy and her sons, Robert, Roger and infant son Joseph. Minnie lived most of her life as a housewife and mother on the family farm in Mentor, MN. and spent the last five years in CA., after her son Robert died. Minnie was always ready with a meal or coffee and dessert for anyone who stopped by. She was always cheerful and loved people. Even in her 80's she was still taking her elderly friends to their doctor appointments or bringing them homemade desserts. Minnie was a grandmother of 12, great grandmother of 19 and great - great grandmother of 4. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who loved her dearly. Minnie definitely lived a rich family filled life. She was honored at her 100th birthday party last year by relatives and friends and was the life of the party. A Vigil service was held for Minnie in California and a funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday, September 21st at 11:00 AM at St Lawrence Catholic Church, 16180 336th Street SE, Mentor, Minnesota. Burial will follow directly after mass. A reception for family and friends will be held in the church gathering room.
