John Samuel Rolf was born Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1951, in Fosston, MN to parents Kenneth and Harriet (Nelson) Rolf. John grew up on the family farm north of McIntosh, MN. On December 23, 1951, John was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church rural McIntosh, by Rev. Arthur Grimstad. John was confirmed in Fergus Falls, MN by Bishop Cecil Johnson on August 17, 1979.
John attended school in McIntosh until the fifth grade when he was afflicted with an illness that caused his brain cells to be destroyed. His health deteriorated for about a year and after a time went into remission. In 1964 John moved to Fergus Falls to live and in 1965 he moved to Brainerd, MN. In 1970 he moved back to Fergus Falls and in 1986 he moved to Fosston, MN where he was a resident until 2020. During his years in Fosston, John enjoyed being a part of the Hope Lutheran Church worship and fellowship opportunities. John also enjoyed the opportunities each week at the Day Activity Center and with the other residents and staff at the group homes where he lived in Fosston. Any day that he could get a Dairy Queen treat always brightened his day!
In 2020 John moved to the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, MN, until the facility closed in 2023, when John moved to McIntosh Senior Living, where he also received excellent care. John was observant, knew his preferences, and was not a man of many words. On behalf of John, the family would like to express our appreciation and deep gratitude for all who cared for John through the years and supported him in his needs in each of the places and communities where he lived. The love, care, compassion, patience, and kindness that many have given is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.
John loved Jesus and throughout his life remembered and could quote Bible verses he memorized in his early childhood. Among his favorites were John 3:16, Revelation 3:20, and Psalm 23. Often on family visits through the years these and other verses were recited together. John went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 20th, 2025, at McIntosh Senior Living, at the age of 73.
John is survived by his siblings, James and Mary Rolf of Moorhead, MN, Mary and Rev. Lyle Aadahl of Hayfield, MN, Naomi and Wayne Peterson of Thief River Falls, MN, Rev. Dr. Joel and Mary-Ann Rolf of Andover, MN, and Paul and Darlene Rolf of McIntosh, MN. Also surviving are many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents.
Blessed be his memory.
