She was the fourth of ten girls in the Sleeth family. She attended Steinbrenner country school, Heier Township, through the eighth grade. She then attended Fosston High School through her sophomore year. Her junior year she attended high school in Northfield, Minnesota while living with her aunt. She then returned to Fosston graduating in 1956. Immediately after graduation she signed on the Hardel Publishing Company and sold magazines door to door. She worked her way up from sales person to manager and traveled extensively in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. She had traveled to 49 of 50 States (excluding only Hawaii). In 1968, she retired from the publishing business and moved closer to home. She lived in Grand Forks, North Dakota and worked for Deaconess Hospital until 1970. On November 28, 1970 she married Norris Halland. To this union, two children were born-Michael and Daniel. They farmed south of Fosston for many years. During that time Jeanette worked for Tri-Valley providing home health services to elderly and disabled persons. She loved visiting with her clients and truly enjoyed doing extra little things for them that made them feel special. The last few years she worked as a personal housecleaner for several families. Jeanette and Norris were later divorced and Jeanette moved into Fosston. She enjoyed doing Sudoku puzzles, visiting with friends and family and spending time in her kitchen. She was known for her delicious lefse, pizzelles and flatbread. But the greatest joy in her life was her four grandchildren. She loved spending time with them: teaching Karrae and Brayden how to cook, doing daycare for them, helping them with schoolwork and attending their school functions. Reading and coloring with Haddie and just trying to keep up with Judson. Haddie's artwork and poems were displayed in her apartment. In April of 2017, Jeanette was diagnosed with lung cancer. She put up a good fight completing all the radiation sessions. In spite of that, the cancer spread. She moved into the Cornerstone Assisted Living in July of 2017. She kept her sense of humor and continued to crack jokes. Our hope was that we could celebrate her 80th birthday with her but that was not to be. God called her home on Tuesday, October 3. 2017.She will be greatly missed by her family: Michael, Patricia, Karrae and Brayden of Fosston, and Daniel, Brandi, Haddie and Judson of Crookston; and by her sisters, Arlene Nesvold (Orvis Lewis) of Fertile, MN, Lota Dietzler of McIntosh, MN, Shirley Paul of Fosston, Carol McCarthy (Larry Nord) of Lake Benton, MN, Margie Strand of Fosston, Judy (John) Gildersleeve of Detroit Lakes, MN, Linda (Wayne) Goldsmith of Fosston, and Donna (Dick) Hoiland of Crookston, MN.
