Irene Hemphill

Irene Hemphill, age 74, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Tuesday, March 19th, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 25th, at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston with the Rev. John Ragan officiating. Interment will be in Kingo Lutheran Cemetery, Fosston. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Sunday, March 24th, at the Carlin Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Irene Mae Hemphill was born July 13, 1944 in Hibbing, Minnesota to parents Donavan and Beatrice Kreps. She was baptized at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on March 19, 1950 and confirmed there on October 19, 1958. She attended school in Hibbing and graduated in 1962. She attended Hibbing Community College, transferred to Bemidji State University, and graduated with an Elementary Education degree in 1966.Irene married her best friend, Thomas Blaine Hemphill, on July 1, 1966. They were married in the Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing. Irene taught in Chisholm, Minnesota for a year after graduating from BSU. She and Tom taught in Brownton, Minnesota for three years before moving to Fosston. They made their home and raised their children there for the past 48 years.Irene was a member of Kingo Lutheran Church where she enjoyed quilting with her friends and serving on various committees. She was passionate about helping others and was an active volunteer in the community. She was a loving mother, wife, and friend to many. Irene compassionately cared for and nurtured all who came into her life, especially children and animals. She enjoyed her flower gardens, reading, knitting, cooking, and spending time with her family at the lake. Irene, at age 74, went to her eternal home on March 19, 2019. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Tom; their children, Rodger of Detroit Lakes, MN, Julie (Shawn) Johnson of Clearbrook, MN, Jeffrey of Las Vegas, NV, and grandsons Bryce and Brody Johnson. She is also survived by one sister Gladys (Jim) Oberstar of Cloquet, MN; and sister-in-law, Margaret Clark of Hibbing, MN. Numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Beatrice Kreps; mother and father-in-law, Blaine and Naomi Hemphill; sister-in-law, Mary Hemphill; niece Kristen (Gary) Baumgaard; her beloved pets and grand puppies; and various other relatives.
