Hilda Kvaale, age 94, from Gully, MN passed away on Tuesday, June 19th at Sanford Hospital in Thief River Falls, MN. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 22nd at 2:00 PM at Country Faith Church, rural Clearbrook, MN with Pastor Larry Dorman officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, MN, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church on Friday. Interment will be at Lund Lutheran Cemetery at Gully, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements. Messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Hilda (Frette) Kvaale was born in Badger Township, rural Erskine, MN on August 6, 1917 to Osmund and Martha (Lee) Frette. She was the oldest of four children, and attended a rural elementary school in Cisco, MN near their home. She graduated from the Erskine High School in 1935. After graduating from high school, she continued her education at the Teacher's Training "Normal" School in McIntosh, receiving her Teaching Certificate in 1936. She began her teaching career later that same year in Johnson Township, at Poplar Isle School, rural Gully, MN.She married Eivind "Ed" Kvaale of Gully on June 27, 1942. They lived in the Gully area raising two children, Eunice and Roger. After Hilda's husband, Ed, passed away in 1954, she continued to live on the Kvaale family farm.Also in 1969, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Bemidji State University in Elementary Education. Hilda was a public elementary teacher for 32 years in various schools in Minnesota. Throughout these years, she lived at multiple locations during the school year. Teaching locations include schools in Eden, Lessor, and Hill River Townships, Carp (rural Baudette), Gatzke, Bejou, Gully and Fosston. She retired from Fosston in 1983. In her retirement from public school, she taught at Gateway Christian Academy in Bagley, MN for three years. Hilda finished out her teaching career home schooling two grandchildren until 1998. For many years, Hilda was organist at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Gully. For the past 30 years she was an active and faithful member of Country Faith Church near Clearbrook, MN. In addition to a busy teaching life, she actively pursued her hobbies of gardening, canning, baking, crafts, and visiting neighbors. Some extra highlights she had were travels to Norway, Alaska, Texas, and California.Hilda walked out her Christian life through her devotion to God. She made reading through the Bible and praying for her family and friends a priority.Hilda remained living at home on the farm until she was hospitalized at Sanford Hospital in Thief River Falls, MN four days before she went Home to Heaven on June 19, 2012, at the age of 94 years.She is survived by her two children: Eunice (Don) Sankey of St. Cloud, MN, and Roger (Jennifer) Kvaale of Gully; four grandchildren: Woody (Tammi) Sankey of St. Cloud, Cindy Dahl of Brownsville, MN, Ed (Shannon) Kvaale of Fosston, Susan (Justin) Thompson of McIntosh; four great grandchildren: Natasha, Jordan, and Treavor Sankey, and Matthew Kvaale; a sister, Myrtle Hamrum, of Brooks, MN; and brother Omer Frette of Ogilvie, MN. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; parents; and a brother, Theodore Frette, as well as other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
