Harley Kjos, age 82, of Mentor, MN, passed away on Monday, November 30th, at Essentia Health Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 11th, in the Family Life Center at New Journey Church in Fosston with the Rev. Michael Sletto officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the Family Life Center. Covid-19 protocol will be observed and mask use is required to attend. Military honors will be conducted by the National Guard Honors Team and arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Fosston. Messages of condolence may be shared at www.carlinfuneral.com. The funeral service will be recorded and available for viewing on Saturday on the Carlin website.Harley Kermit Kjos was born on September 4, 1938 in Fertile, Minnesota to parents Oscar and Myrtle (Hagen) Kjos. He was baptized and confirmed at Sundal Lutheran Church near Fertile. He grew up in Fertile and graduated from Fertile High School in 1956. During his high school years, Harley worked for Nelson Hay in Fertile and delivered the Minneapolis Star and Tribune door to door. Harley entered the United States Army in July of 1956 and received his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Harley was stationed for most of his military career at Fort Huachuca in Tucson, Arizona with the Military Police. He received his honorable discharge in 1962. Upon returning home from the service, Harley lived in Hopkins, Minnesota and drove truck for Midcontinent Freight Lines for several years.He was united in marriage to Carol Ann Benson on March 15, 1968 in Watertown, South Dakota. After their marriage, they lived and raised their family in Hopkins. Their home in Hopkins was not only home for raising their children but was open for any neighborhood friends who needed a place to crash for the night or to provide a stopping point for up-north relatives and friends. He attended the Police Academy in Chicago, Illinois at Northwestern and then proceeded to work for the Hopkins Police Department for the next 23 years. After retirement from the police department, Harley worked as a security officer at several places in the Twin Cities. Starting in 1998, he began driving back and forth from Hopkins to Mentor while he was building their retirement home. Harley loved to drive. He and Carol officially moved to their new home in Mentor in 2002. Liking to keep busy, Harley worked for a time at American Crystal Sugar in Crookston and also at the Mentor C-Store.Harley loved to hunt and fish. He was a modest person and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Carol, of Mentor; four children, John of Mentor, David (Nikole) of West Pelzer, SC, Angie (Isaiah) Nyamburi of Edina, MN, and Harley, Jr. (Tressa) of Coon Rapids, MN; 12 grandchildren, Jesse, Jaden, Ben, Mandy (Ryan), Elizabeth (Austin), Kailey (fiancé, Blake), Joshua, Elijah, Matthew, Jordan, Taylor, and Jake. 5 great grandchildren, Tommy, Dillon, Hadley, Soren, and Jade.Also surviving is one sister, Janice (Stanley) Sowada of Avon, MN; niece, Joey Sowada (Jason); and one grand niece, Emma.He was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Douglas; and baby boy nephew (Sowada).
