Glenn Johnson, Sr., age 90, of Naytahwaush, MN, and formerly of Lengby, MN, passed away on Saturday (January 1st) at the Mahnomen Health Center in Mahnomen, MN. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (January 6th) at Poplar Lake Lutheran Church, rural Fosston with Doyle Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Lengby City Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Military rites will be conducted by the Spring Lake V.F.W. Post #2759 of Lengby and arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston. Messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Glenn was born on August 11, 1920 in McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Edwin and Maria (Klingstrom) Johnson. His father farmed and ran a livery. His mother was a homemaker.Glenn lived in the McIntosh-Fosston area, attending country schools. He moved to Lengby with his parents, sisters and brother until October 19, 1942 when he went into the Army. He served as a medic and truck driver. While overseas, he was in Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines, Po-Vally France, and northern Africa. He was honorably discharged on October 29, 1945.He was united in marriage to Edith Haltli on October 12, 1942.Glenn was also in the CCS for 2 years when he was sixteen years old. He drove truck for a time, before entering the Army, for J.P. Peterson of Lengby and several others.After his discharge, he and Edith made their home for a while in Sioux City, Iowa. The moved back home to Lengby to make their home with his parents.Glenn's love of travel took him many places to do a number of jobs. He was a well driller in Greenland and Boston. He worked many years in Alaska on an Army base, building roads and cooking. He was employed by Al's Electric for Al Olson, Sr. as an electricians helper. He worked for the City of Fosston after deciding to quit traveling. He also tended bar for the municipal liquor store in Fosston and at the Corner Bar in Lengby. His love of cooking brought he and Edith to run the Café in Lengby, until failing health caused him to semi-retire, after which he loved to work on small engines out of his shop at home. He was a member of Spring Lake V.F. W. Post #2759 of Lengby.He and Edith loved to garden and fish. They raised a garden each summer.Together they raised eight boys and one girl, Dwight (Colleen) of Naytahwaush, MN, Raymond (Debbie) of Cross Lake, MN, Michael (Carol) of Lengby, Greg (Karen) of Duluth, MN, Tim (Marlene) of Lengby, Gary (Julie) of Elk River, MN, Steven (Pam) of Superior, WI, Carol (Jerry) of Foss, OK, and Glenn, Jr. (Wendy) of Nisswa, MN. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Edith, one daughter, Caroline, one brother, Raymond Johnson, four sisters, Selma, Helena, Genevieve, and Muriel, two half brothers, Henry and Victor and one half sister, Grace; an infant grandson; and great great granddaughter, Gabrielle Jo Johnson.
