Floyd Syverson, age 86, of rural Fosston, MN, passed away on Sunday (December 6th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (December 11th) at Vernes Lutheran Church, rural McIntosh with the Pastor Ryan Rasmussen officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the McIntosh American Legion Post #6891. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Floyd Alvin Syverson was born on January 25, 1923 in Hill River Township, rural McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Theodore and Linda (Christianson) Syverson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Vernes Lutheran Church of rural McIntosh. Floyd grew up in Hill River Township and attended rural school at the Lindsay School through the eighth grade. He then went to school at Gonvick High School in Gonvick, Minnesota from 1936 until 1938 at which time he transferred to McIntosh High School where he graduated in 1940. Following high school, Floyd went to the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and spent from 1941 until 1942 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Floyd entered the United States Marine Corps on November 28, 1944, serving in the Pacific and Japan following the surrender in Hiroshima. He received his honorable discharge on August 20, 1946.Upon his return to the States, Floyd continued his education at Finley Engineering College in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating in 1950. He returned to Minnesota in April of 1952, and was employed as the resident engineer for C.J. Hastad in Halstad, Minnesota. During these years, Floyd lived in Mahnomen and in Erskine, Minnesota. Floyd was united in marriage to Delores Fealy on June 25, 1954 at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. After their marriage, Floyd and Delores lived in Erskine for a year before moving to Alexandria, Virginia in February of 1955. It was there that Floyd accepted a position with the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Electrification Administration, a division that administered loans to locally owned telephone companies. With his position, Floyd and Delores lived in Virginia until June of 1955, Wolf Point, Montana from July 1955 until September 1958 and Grand Island, Nebraska from September of 1958 until his retirement in 1983. Upon his retirement, Floyd was recognized for 30 years of outstanding service. They returned to the area in 1985 and have since resided in rural Fosston.Floyd was an active member of Vernes Lutheran Church and a long time member of Gideon's International. Floyd passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 86 years. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Delores of Fosston; one daughter, Linda Syverson Guild (Mark) of Bethesda, MD; two sons, Paul (Lori) Syverson of Fort Collins, CO, and Lee Syverson of Washington, D.C.; four granddaughters, Nichole and Kelsey Syverson and Katie and Christa Guild.Also surviving are nine siblings, Ruby Heideman of McIntosh, Ardell (Lloyd) Opdahl of Oklee, MN, Eleanora (Morris) Hendrickson of McIntosh, Arnold (Conne) Syverson of Trail, MN, Entrip (Sharon) Syverson of Lakeville, MN, Bernice (Jerome) Voxland of McIntosh, Gloria (Mark) Morque of Lebanon, MO, Karsten (Corky) Syverson of McIntosh, and Viola (Richard) Georgeson of Hillsboro, ND; brother-in-law, Rueben Brekke of McIntosh; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Verna Syverson and Lorraine Brekke; infant twins Morris and Doris; and brother-in-law, Curtis Heideman.
