Esther Lomen, age 96, of Fosston, MN and formerly of Lengby, MN, passed away on Saturday (July 27th) at Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (August 2nd) at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby with the Rev. Mark Faugstad officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Cemetery, Lengby. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday (August 1st) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Esther Irene Mathison was born November 4, 1916 in Winsor Township in Clearwater County near Berner, Minnesota to Martin J. Mathison and Emma Sylvester Mathison. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Saron Lutheran Church south of Berner. Esther was three years old when her mother gave birth to a baby boy. Both mother and baby died. On June 24, 1931 her father married Akseline Larson.On June 5, 1935 Esther married Louis Lomen. They made their home on a farm west of Lengby until Louis died in 1970. In 1971 she moved to Fosston after selling the farm to her younger son, Kenneth.In the early 1960's she went to work at Daisy's Drive Inn in Fosston and worked there for several years until going to work at the Fosston Hospital as a cook. She worked there until age 75, the last few years on a part time basis.Esther was always active in community affairs. She was church organist first at Immanuel and then at St. Paul churches in Lengby. She also held offices in the ladies aid in St. Paul. After moving to Fosston she was active in the Christian Singles Club and was able to travel with that group. Esther loved music and singing, she sang with the "Ambassadors of Praise" and the "Norwegian Singers" for some time. She was also Treasurer of the Garden Club and volunteered much of her time at the Fosston Embassy Center as well as delivering "meals on wheels."Esther was taken home to her Lord on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the age of 96. Left to mourn are her three children, Luverne (Kitty) of Lengby, MN, Marion Abeldgaard of Homer, AK, and Kenny (Betty) of Lengby. Also 10 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, and her husband, Louis on June 19, 1970.
