Elmer Nord, age 87, from Fosston, MN passed away on Tuesday, June 5th at Essentia Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 10:30 AM at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, June 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston, and there will also be reviewal for one hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery in Fosston, and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements. Messages of condolence may be sent at www.carlinhoialmen.com.Elmer John "Doc" Nord was born on November 8, 1924 in Fosston, MN to John and Selma (Lund) Nord. He was baptized into the Christian faith. Elmer grew up in Fosston and graduated from Fosston High School in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force after high school and attained the rank of corporal. He graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU) in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. In 1952, he joined Donald Mark as a pharmacist at Mark's Corner Drug. The partnership continued until 1968, when Elmer bought the store and it became Nord's Corner Drug. In 1987, Elmer sold the store to John and Julie Nord and continued to work at their side until his retirement in April of 2011. He also served as Director of Pharmacy at Fosston Municipal Hospital for over 24 years.On June 23, 1957, Elmer was united in marriage to Frances "Frannie" Burt in Lengby, MN. They were married 53 years and together raised three children and hosted two foreign exchange students. He was active in many organizations including the Rotary Club, the American Legion Post, Fosston City Council, AFS, Sons of Norway and the Fosston School Board. In 1974, he was awarded the Fosston Service Award. He was very active at Hope Lutheran Church holding many positions including congregational president and also sang in the Senior Choir for many years. He, along with Frannie, was past "Honorary Person of the Year" for Fosston's Heritage Days. Elmer was an accomplished woodworker and also enjoyed golfing, reading, Sudoku puzzles and spending time with family and friends.Elmer is survived by one daughter, Barb (Jon) Bergquist of Bemidji, MN; two sons, John (Julie) Nord of Fosston and Paul (Monica) Nord of Vergas, MN; six grandchildren, Brady Bergquist, Jared Bergquist, Amanda (Carl) Hanson, Patrick Nord, Charles Nord (fiancé Kaley Ratz) and James Nord; one sister, Lydia Zappa of Fridley, MN; two brothers, Glen Nord of Maple Grove, MN and Dennis (Jacki) Nord of LaSalle, IL; two sisters-in-law, Vivian Nord of Fosston and Betty Devine of Cambridge, MN; as well as many nieces, and nephews. Also surviving are AFS host sons, Marcos Hecke of Brazil and Obedia Shembe of South Africa.Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his dear wife Frannie; two brothers, Les and Art Nord; two sisters, Berdella Gustafson and Ruth Nord.Elmer passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Essentia Health in Fosston at the age of 87 years.
