Effie Mae Handy, age 94, of Gully, MN, passed away on Friday (January 26th) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (January 30th) at Sand Valley Lutheran Church in Trail, MN with Michael Sletto and the Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Sand Valley Lutheran Cemetery, Trail. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Monday (January 29th) at the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home in Fosston. There will also be reviewal for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston. She grew to womanhood in Lengby and attended the Lengby School through the eighth grade. She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Lengby and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Fosston, MinnesotaEffie was united in marriage to Johnnie T. Handy on October 10, 1931. Together they farmed and raised their family on their farm in Eden Township near Trail. Although Effie spent most of her life as a devoted wife and mother working on the farm, she also spent a short time working at the Gully Café in Gully, Minnesota.Effie was the only living Charter Member of the Trail V.F.W. Auxiliary and was granted Lifetime Membership status. She held many offices of both the V.F.W. and Sand Valley Lutheran Church and was active in both up to the time of her death.Effie passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007 at First Care Hospital in Fosston at the age of 94 years, nine months and 27 days.She leaves to mourn two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn (Dr. Frank) DeMarino of Clarksburg, WV, and Linda (Edward) Turenne of Clearbrook, MN; daughter-in-law, Marion Granum Handy of Fosston; special "son", Richard Brueing of Burnsville, MN; grandchildren, Scott (Mary) Handy of Fargo, ND, Jon (Gretchen) Handy of Grand Forks, ND, Dr. Dan DeMarino of Bridgeport, WV, Theresa (Joe) Wysor of Fairfax Station, VA, Marci (Corey) Turenne Hansen of Sartell, MN, Michelle (Marty) Levin of Fosston, Maja (Paul) Glidden of Appleton, WI, "special" granddaughter, Amber Mae Peoples of Ellensburg, WA; great grandchildren, Erin (Steve) Wirtz, Jenny Handy, Sarah & Nicholas Handy, Hannah & Luke DeMarino, Callie Ann & Victoria Wysor, Ellie, Carlie & Casey Hansen, Tanner, Ryan & Brecken Johnnie Levin.Also surviving are three brothers, Curtis (Winnie) of Wolverton, MN, Willis of Barnesville, MN, and Larry (Norma) of Clearbrook, MN and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Johnnie, son Robert in 1994, sister Lillian Fjerstad, two infant sisters Amy and Susan, and four brothers Charles, Leslie, Kenneth, and Nobel, and infant grandson, David DeMarino.Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Trail V.F.W.
