Doug Planten, age 75, of Erskine, MN, passed away on Friday, February 14th, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22nd, at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with the Rev. Pam Thorson officiating. Family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Douglas ‘Doug’ Moran Planten was born December 19, 1949. in St. Bernandine’s hospital in San Bernardino, California to parents Ruth Moran and Gerrit Planten III. He attended school in San Bernardino and graduated in 1967.
Doug met Rita at Win-E-Mac motel in Erskine which later on they owned and managed together. They got married on August 23,1985 and with this marriage he gained stepchildren, Deanna, Joe, Kris and John. He played a large role to his grandson, Zack, since birth which he treated like his son. He was a big influence on him and taught him his work ethic, and how to be accountable in all aspects of life.
After selling the motel, Rita and Doug purchased the campground at Cameron Lake, in Erskine. While managing it he was also a school bus driver for many years. After the divorce, he moved to Yuma, Arizona but still came back in the area during warmer seasons. Around 2021, he moved back to Erskine to be closer to family and friends. He then worked again as a school's bus driver and truck driver until recent health issues arose. He would often say that he loved seeing the school children and expressed that it was the highlight of his day. He also worked as truck driver for Lucken’s for many years and remembered that time fondly.
He was involved in many parts of the community, including the Commercial Club and, used to be part in organizing the Erskine Water Carnival yearly.
Doug was a hard worker, a true patriot, and a positive impact on the community. He was always there to help when his friends or family were in need. He was a supportive, kind and loving grandpa.
Survived by his ex-wife Rita, grandson Zack (Charise), great grandkids Ava, DJ and Theo, stepchildren, extended family, good friends, And his furry companion, cat Kiki.
