Derva Sveningson, age 81, of Mentor, MN passed away on Thursday, November 26th at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 30th at 11:00 AM at Faith Lutheran Church in Mentor with Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Faith Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery, rural Mentor and the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston is in charge of the arrangements.Derva Belle Leora Schehr was born March 12, 1928 in Terrebonne (Red Lake County), MN to parents Melvin and Esther (Schultz) Schehr. She attended Dougdale School through the third grade, and then Mentor School where she graduated in 1945. She was baptized and confirmed in the Mentor Lutheran Church.Derva was united in marriage to Carl Sveningson on March 12, 1947 on her birthday at Crookston, MN and they resided in the Mentor, MN area throughout their lives.She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Circle in Mentor and was active as treasurer of the Rosehill Cemetery Board. She was also widely regarded as the Community Historian. Derva spent her entire adult life caring for her family, friends, and any new acquaintances she encountered.Derva passed away on Thanksgiving Day- November 26, 2009 at the age of 81 years at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks after a brief illness.Survivors include son, Steven (Kristie) Sveningson of Mentor; daughters, Cynthia Thode Handyside of Crookston, MN, Sandra (JC) Kirkland of Mentor, Peggy (David) Brodeur of East Grand Forks, MN, Penny Sveningson of Crookston and Lori (David) Cyr of Grafton, ND; grandchildren, James, John and Patrick Thode, Jackie Salvhus, Mindy Kirkland, Christopher and Casey Sveningson, John and Scott Brodeur, Stephanie Blair, Christina Broadwell, and Allison and Jacob Cyr; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Arlene Murphy of Montrose, MI; sister-in-law, Clara (Wilson) Galland of Mentor; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; two brothers, Alerie Schehr and Harold Schultz; and infant sister, Darlene.
