Delores Joan Ogaard (Toody) was born July 3, 1936, in Halstad, Minnesota to Selmer and Matilda (Tuff) Ogaard. As a child, Delores, her siblings and her parents lived in Halstad and later moved to a farm in Ada, Minnesota. Delores loved to help her father on the farm during harvest by driving trucks and tractors or you could find her working in the garden with her mom.
Delores attended school in Halstad and later, when they moved to Ada, there she attended high school, graduating from Ada High School in 1954. While attending high school, Delores met the “love of her life and future husband” Darrel Westcott. Darrel and Delores were united in marriage on June 29, 1956, in Ada. Then Darrel enlisted in the United States Air Force so they moved to Virginia to live at the Langley Air Force Base. While living in Virginia, Darrel and Delores had their first child, Duane. Then in 1961, Darrel was honorably discharged from the Air Force so they moved back to Ada.
While living in Ada, Darrel and Delores’s next two children were born, David and Diana. While living in Ada, Darrel commuted to work in Winger to work at Farmer’s State Bank as an insurance agent. So, in 1970, Darrel and Delores moved their family to Winger where they would make their home.
Delores worked at home where she was an avid gardener, seamstress, cook, wife and mother. Later, Darrel and Delores opened their own insurance agency in Fertile, Minnesota where Delores worked right by Darrel’s side. When their children had grown, Darrel and Delores moved their insurance business to their home in Winger.
Delores had a passion for cooking, so in 1996 Delores decided to become head cook for Lutheran Social Services senior meals. She worked for LSS in Winger from 1996 to 2010, when the program ended. There is a saying – “cooking is love made visible” – that was so true for Delores.
Delores was also a very active member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Calvary Ladies Aid, and the Winger Lioness Club.
Delores had a zest for life, her presence and laughter would light up the room. Delores knew how to make their house a home – with her loving kind heart, her special holiday dishes and table cloths and the comfort food she would prepare! Family Monday night suppers, birthdays celebrated with strawberry shortcake or ice cream cake were very important to Delores and Darrel - anytime spent with family was important to them.
In March of 2014, Delores moved from her home in Winger to McIntosh Senior Living in McIntosh due to health reasons, where she has resided until her passing.
Delores passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023, at Essentia Hospital in Fosston, Minnesota at the age of 86. Delores passed away on St. Patrick’s Day – I believe Delores was Darrel’s “pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”
Delores is survived by her children, Duane (Lori) Westcott of Ada, MN, David Westcott of Fosston, MN, Diana (Paul) Westcott-Lindseth of Winger, MN; four grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Delores was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Darrel; her brother, Donald Ogaard; sisters, Thelma Foss Sipe, Marjorie Blasey; infant brother, Stanley and her parents.
