Clarice Ulland, age 88, of Mentor, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 under hospice care at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 1, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Rodnes Lutheran Church in rural Erskine with the Rev. Peter Satren and the Rev. Dale Finstrom officiating. Visitation will be held at Rodnes Church on Sunday, August 31, 2008 between 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M., with a Family Service to follow. Interment will be at Rodnes Lutheran Church Cemetery. Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Erskine is in charge of the arrangements.Clarice Marie Hoppe was born on April 25, 1920 in Skandia Township, Barnes County, North Dakota to parents John and Mable (Sommerfeldt) Hoppe. Clarice first met the love of her life, Orville Ulland, in school when they were but six years old. They were married on April 5, 1941 in Crookston, Minnesota and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in 2008.Clarice and Orville farmed together and ran a meat market in Buxton, N.D. after their marriage. They moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where Clarice worked at J.C. Penney until they purchased a farm and moved to Mentor in 1960. They started Ulland's Resort on the north end of Maple Lake in 1964. Clarice was also a part-time postal clerk at the Mentor Post Office and sold Avon and Amway products. She became a resident of Pioneer Memorial Care Center in August of 2007.She was an active member of Rodnes Lutheran Church and WELCA. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, painting and many crafts. She treasured all of the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. On Wednesday, August 27, 2008 Clarice Ulland, at the age of 88, passed away at Pioneer Memorial Care Center under the care of hospice, the staff of Pioneer, and her family.Left to celebrate her life and to hold her in their hearts are her husband, Orville, a daughter, Sandra (Keith) Fontaine of Mentor, a son, Gary (Rena) Ulland of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Kip (Sheila) Fontaine of Bagley, MN, Kelly (Brian) Wavra of East Grand Forks, MN, Karl (Laurie) Fontaine of Cave Creek, AZ, Kraig (Amy) Fontaine of Bagley, Kirk Fontaine of Red Lake Falls, MN, Dr. Denver (Priscilla) Ulland of Duluth, MN, and Dr. Erik (Melanie) Ulland of Madison, WI; ten great-grandchildren, Karli, Keaton, and Kael Fontaine, Kloe Wavra, Kristian Fontaine, Kassandra and Kamden Fontaine, Dayton and Dalton Ulland, and Stellan Ulland; two brothers, Melvin Finstrom of Buxton, ND and Alton (JoAnn) Finstrom of Grand Forks; one sister, Ruth Cohen of Grand Prairie, TX; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Luverne Sommerfeldt, Francis Hoppe, and Earl Finstrom, sisters Olive Bohn and Fern Van Alstine, and grandson Kris Fontaine.We give many thanks to the volunteers of hospice, the staff at Pioneer, Dr. Darren Swanson, and Pastors Tim Lundeen, Dale Finstrom, and Peter Satren for all their tender care and support.
