Alvin Brovold, age 94, of Erskine, MN, passed away on Monday (February 23rd) at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday (February 26th) at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine with the Rev. Timothy Lundeen officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, rural Erskine. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Alvin Harold Brovold was born on August 29, 1914 in McIntosh, Minnesota to parents Adolph and Clara (Amberson) Brovold. He grew up on a farm east of McIntosh and attended country school and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1932. Following high school, Alvin attended Bemidji State Teacher's College and graduated from Northern Business College of Bemidji in 1936.Alvin was united in marriage to Generva Nyland in Gully, Minnesota on October 14, 1940. To this union two children were born, Dianne and Gary.Alvin spent his entire life in the grocery business. He and Generva owned Hartz stores in Halstad, Minnesota, Kennedy, Minnesota and Hallock, Minnesota. In 1950, they moved to Erskine and owned the Hartz store in Erskine and McIntosh until his retirement.He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and had served as President, Vice President and served as a Trustee for many years. During the time he was in business he was very active in the Erskine Commercial Club holding many different offices. He served on the Erskine City Council as a Trustee for 12 years. He was on the board when the Erskine Clinic was formed.Besides being a lifetime grocer, Alvin loved horses and raised many purebred Arabian horses. He took pride in his care and time spent with his horses and was always eager to show them when visitors came. He also avidly rode his bicycle given to him as a Christmas gift. Over the years, he rode over 10,000 miles.Alvin was a family man. His family was always first. Many family trips will always be remembered and also the family reunions which he loved to organize and attend. He loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren with all his heart. He will be dearly missed.Alvin passed away on Monday, February 23, 2009 at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine at the age of 94 years.Survivors include his son, Gary (Julie) Brovold of Erskine; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ryan (Kristin) Brovold, and their children, Erica and Emily of Clear Lake, MN, Shelley (Joshua) Heitman, and their children, Ava and Siriana of Ada, MN, and Wade Severson and his children, Kristion, Kyler and Kelsey of White Bear Lake, MN; and son-in-law, Stan Severson of Afton, MN.Preceded in death by his wife, Generva; daughter, Dianne; his parents; and sister, Myrtle Stardig.
