Alice Sistad, age 97, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Tuesday (August 31st) at First Care Hospital in Fosston. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday (September 3rd) at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Arlen Hermodson officiating. Interment will be in Valle Lutheran Cemetery, rural Grygla, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday (September 2nd) and for one hour prior to the service on Friday, all at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston. Arrangements are with the Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston and messages of condolence may be sent at carlinhoialmen.com.Alice Irene Waale was born July 12, 1913 to Tom & Sena (Skretvedt) Waale in Kratka Township, east of Thief River Falls, Minnesota. She was baptized August 17, 1913. At an early age she moved with her parents to Neilsville, Minnesota and there she was confirmed into the Lutheran faith October 30, 1927.She attended school at Neilsville through 11th grade, her senior year she attended Climax High School & graduated in 1930. While attending high school she played basketball & she enjoyed it very much. She worked in the beet and potato fields, cleaning house, doing laundry, and cooking for different families. It was in the beet or potato fields where she met Marvin Sistad who became her husband on November 19, 1933. They celebrated 75 years of marriage. Together they farmed at Neilsville, Grygla and Fosston, Minnesota. They retired from farming in 1975 and Alice & Marvin built a new home south of Maple Lake near Erskine, Minnesota. They lived there until May of 2005. They then moved into Fosston to the Summerfield Apartments. In November of 2007 she moved into the Prairie Pines Assisted Living where she was still a resident at the time of her death. She had spent a few weeks in First Care Nursing Home and was admitted to First Care Hospital in Fosston on Sunday morning where she passed away on August 31, 2010 surrounded by family at the age of 97 years, 1 month, and 19 days.Alice loved her Lord, her family & friends. She enjoyed her flowers, gardening and was very active in her church wherever she lived. She helped start a Sunday School in her church in Grygla, taught Sunday School in Fosston, was active in ladies aid, circles, church quilting, and Bible studies at Grygla, Fosston and Maple Lake.Survivors include eight children, Marlyn (Gloria) of Grygla, Gene (Kay) of Fosston, Dennis (Ilene) of Fosston, Wanda (Owen) Fonken of Coon Rapids, MN, Roger (Dianne) of Iron, MN, Richard (Karlyn) of Fosston, Gary (Linda) of Ulen, MN and Keith (Ruby) of Fosston; 26 grandchildren, 52 great grand children, and nine great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Ole Waale of Thief River Falls, MN; and three sisters, Stella Gast of Ada, MN, Doris Tueseth of Fertile, MN, and Lorraine (Earl) Knutson of Glenwood, MN; sisters-in-law Hazel Bjorge, Alma Foss, Adeline Sletten, Bernice Sistad & Lottie Sistad, and many nieces and nephews to numerous to mention. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin; son Wayne, two sisters, Ina Braaten and Gladys Sistad; and brother Hans Waale. She will be missed by many. Blessed be her memory.
