Alfred Smithling, Jr., age 88, of Fosston, MN, passed away on Sunday, May 24th, at his home under care of Hospice. Per his request, there will be no services. Military honors and interment will be in Piper City, IL at a later date. Arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Fosston and messages of condolence may be shared at www.carlinfuneral.com.Alfred William Smithling, Jr. was born on February 24, 1932 in Pontiac, Michigan to parents Alfred, Sr. and Laura (Caine) Smithling. He grew up in Oakland County, Michigan and graduated from high school in 1950. He entered the United States Navy in September of 1951 and was stationed in Cuba and North Africa. He received his honorable discharge in July of 1953 and returned to Michigan. Alfred was married to Phyllis Johnston on December 20, 1952. To this union, nine children were born, Robin, Alfred III, Deborah, Dena, Timothy, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Chad, and Phyllisa. The family lived in Michigan, Illinois, and California. Alfred held several jobs throughout his life, primarily in farming, construction, and factory work.He was divorced from Phyllis and later married Bertha "Bea" Phinney. He has lived in Fosston with his daughter, Robin, for the past seven years. He will be laid to rest next to Bea in Piper City, Illinois.Alfred was a "jack of all trades", liked to work with his hands, and could fix or remake nearly anything.Survivors include eight of his nine children; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and three step-children.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Phyllis and Bea; son, Chad; sister, Edith and brother, Robert.
